The wool industry remains one of Australia's major producers of export income and its continued profitability is of major significance to the economic welfare of the nation. The industry has experienced profound short- and long-term difficulties, calling for a major input of research and development. The Cooperative Research Centre for Premium Quality Wool was established in 1993 to meet this need.

The Centre addresses the major issues involved in wool demand such as lightweight construction, softness and ease of care. The research is directed at the performance of the fibre and how this may be improved either by genetic, nutritional and physiological manipulation or through direct chemical and physical intervention. The research program has a balance of long-term strategic elements including biomolecular and ultrastructural components as well as shorter-term tactical projects. It is designed to focus on improving product quality at all stages of the production process from wool follicle to finished fabric.

The CRC education program recognises that the wool industry has always been dispersed at both the national and global level. Previous efforts to meet education, training and technology transfer needs have been piecemeal. This must change rapidly. The staff and resources of the CRC partners will contribute to a unique education facility covering all aspects of wool production and processing.

Australia is pre-eminent in the production of wool, wool biology and wool technology research. The efforts of the CRC will harness this expertise and expedite its exploitation for the benefit of the Australian wool industry.
